Boy, oh Boy!

We are used to seeing Christopher Kanes' bright and sometimes challenging women's wear collections on the catwalk, so hearing that the Scottish born designer has turned his attention to menswear for S/S 2013 made us girls eager to take a look...

Our initial reaction was that there are lots of great looking pieces, but most of them we would want to wear ourselves, rather than see them on the backs of the men in our lives!

Maybe it's the pretty colours, or the floral prints, or the baby faced model, we cant decide.

See for yourself, what do you think?

Mr & Mrs Missoni

You may remember quite a few months back that we wrote about the engagement of Margherita Missoni, and marvelled at the possibilities of what her wedding dress could be...well, the wait is over.

Missoni and Amos were married last weekend in Italy and the bride wore a gown that she had designed herself. Truly romantic, a touch pre-raphaelite even, it is a vision of flowing florals and silk. The piece is topped off by an impressive veil and diamond encrusted tiara atop the bride's braids.

As you would expect the bride looks stunning, but if I'm being honest I don't think there would be many other women who could pull this number off! It's a tad tricky to say the least...

The reception, which was held in the Missoni estate gardens, saw guests and  newly weds lounging on Moroccan/Missoni style cushions and rugs, and enjoying a laid back affair. This for me looks the epitome of laid back Italian cool...jealous...us? Sure our invite got lost in the post!

The couple look truly happy and their wedding really does seem to reflect their hippy style. Congratulations to another happy couple!!!

Bravo Holly!

I applauded when I saw a TwitPic of Holly Willoughby at home - shock - without make-up!

Now ladies, I know sometimes going out without make-up would ensure hives but how about tweeting it to 2.5 million Twitter followers? Would you do it?

Images courtesy of Daily Mail

We've seen everyone from the likes of Kate Moss to Rihanna to Sarah Jessica Parker, but how about Mrs Smith?

I believe some celebrities look better without make up and Holly is one of them! She looks fresh faced and younger! I think, personally, I'll keep my pre-made-up face for the reflection of the bathroom mirror and not scare my 27 Twitter followers with it.

And Smile...

Having seen the feature on Yoko Ono in the new issue of Vogue, it was difficult to believe from the photographs that she’s 79 years old. No cellulite, very few wrinkles, toned and super-trim.

(hmmmm …. note to self ….. lay off the wine and sunbathing…)

Images courtesy of Flickr
But even more surprising is the success of her simple concept installation within her latest exhibition, currently running at the Serpentine Gallery in London. The main exhibition itself, as you might expect, is Yoko’s amalgam of artistic opinions from the past 5 decades, challenging us to think, question and justify.

However, #smilesfilm simply asks each individual to smile/grin/smirk/smooch to the lens, and then the images run on a continuous loop, infecting even the grumpiest visitor.

Go on, go on, go on Yoko. Please bring it to Edinburgh. Make us smile on this rainy day.

 Say CHEESE……

Viva la Diva's

If you were a fan of all things 'Girl Power' way back when, then you are going to love this!:

Jennifer Saunders has written a West End musical based on the songs of the Spice Girls!

It's called Viva Forever! and it previews in November. All involved are hoping it will follow the success of other so called 'juke box' musicals such as Mama Mia and We will Rock You.

According to its producers, Viva Forever! is "the story of a beautiful, talented girl and her best friends who get swept up in the obsession of today's TV celebrity culture".

Time to dig out your Union Flag dress, no?!

Game, Set and Match

We all love Wimbledon at Jane Davidson!

And to celebrate the start of the tournament at SW19 I've chosen my favourite (read WORST) looks from the past few decades of the game.

From below-the-knee skirts of the 1920's to above the knee boots as warm up gear the fashion of tennis really has developed mostly due to the rulebook being made a little bit more lenient and the introduction of two sisters from across the pond.

See below for my favourite looks (I had to edit a lot of the Williams sisters' ones out as this would have been a Williams sister fashion disaster blog!)

Who Knew?!!?!

This must truly be one of the best kept and unexpected hook ups of recent times.

Images courtesy of Fashionology

I honestly could not believe it when I read that model Agyness Deyn and actor Giovanni Ribisi (Phoebe's brother in Friends) got hitched last weekend!!

Apparently the pair, who have been dating for 'a while', were spotted waiting in line at the Los Angeles County Registrar. Now, we love our gossip mags in Jane Davidson, and no-one even knew that this pair were dating. The gorgeous Brit and the quirky actor have never really been snapped together, but obviously somethings been going on. It seems that all over the Internet no one has seen this couple coming.

Personally, I find the whole thing completely refreshing. They have utterly side swerved all the media frenzy that surrounds any new celebrity couple and simply eloped. And, I somehow suspect that their new married life will be similarly low key if they have anything to do with it.

Congratulations to the new Mr and Mrs Ribisi and kudos to their very rock and roll approach to the whole thing!!!

The Great British Summer. . . . .

Whether you’re trotting off to Ascot (but NOT in a fascinator, please) or picking up a rosette at the Royal Highland Show, one thing that both ends of the country will be sharing this weekend is lousy weather.

Pah – flaming June, indeed.

Let’s just hope that the skies clear up for Wimbledon next week, otherwise we might be subjected again to Cliff’s rendition of Summer Holiday. Crikey.

ST TROPEZ SELF TAN MOUSSE DARK

I have tried many self tans but have just discovered a winner.
Images courtesy of StTropez
St Tropez self tan mousse in dark is so easy to apply and it contains innovative melanin technology which when used tailors to your own skin type. It gives you an intense colour without any streaks and the tell tale self tan aroma. If you are looking for a fabulous colour try it.

Diane has arrived!

We've just taken delivery of the most beautiful Diane von Furstenberg collection.

She named her pre-fall lineup Macadam Diva—macadam being the French word for asphalt. The notion lent parts of the collection a harder-than-usual look, not exactly punk per se but toughened up with studding, chains, snaps, and zips. But with the undertone of a graphic floral print - creating a surprising contrast.

With Mispelaere in the picture offbeat colour combinations have become a regular occurrence here. Navy and orange being a main undertone as seen in this faux-wrap dress which is perfect for wearing now but also a few months into Autumn.

We love the sequin embellished tops especially for adding a slice of fun to your pre-fall wardrobe.

Love it or hate it - it's the marmite of the season we're sure - but we think that all Diane fans will find something to love in the collection.

Love,

Nikki

We give you our best tips for holiday packing!

Preparing and packing for holiday can be a nightmare but we want to give you our best hints and tips for making it a more enjoyable experience...

1. Choose a colour scheme.

I heard this tip from a girl preparing for honeymoon - she wanted to pack light for a city trip so decided on a colour scheme of blue - all her 'coloured' pieces were tones of blue. This meant that her basic pieces - which were all white - were interchangable - her blue jeans went with her white tee and navy blazer but the navy blazer also went with her white jeans and blue tee? This made packing easier and meant she cut down what she was wearing by half! She then had one red dress - this was her going for exceptional dress - she wore this for a special dinner one night or for a romantic walk at night.

2. Think about what you are doing!

Consider everything you might be doing (tennis? posh dinners? hiking? swimming? city explorations?) - then put your favourite items for these scenarios on your bed in piles of tops, bottoms, dresses, shoes,jackets/coverups, swimwear. Anything that doesn't have a specific use doesn't need to come without you.

3. Bury your shoes...

We don't mean literally. Place your shoes at the bottom of your suitcase and fill in all the extra space with underwear and swimwear.

4. Rolling = Less ironing!

It's an age old tip but it really does work - roll all your clothes and when you arrive they will be crease free.

 5. It's a wrap

Scarves add very little to your load and will multi-task on holiday. Use to double over as a mini skirt on the beach, as a cover up over a bikini en-route to the bar, turban style on your head to protect hair during serious sun bathing and, of course, conventionally around your neck to brighten up a plain top or protect shoulders from sun during lunchtime.

 6. Pack a hat!

I love taking a straw trilby on holiday - it epitomises glam travel but also is great for protecting my hair when sunbathing. Just don't pack it...the Worzel Gummidge look isn't great when sunbathing by the pool in ibiza.

Whatever you are doing - HAVE FUN!

We promise to make you feel fabulous...

Ladies, we declare on Saturday 16th June 2012 to make you feel fabulous...

After the success of our 2011 event we have decided to take on the Edinburgh Girls' dilemma of the perfect fitting jeans. In association with our favourites, MiH Jeans, we will help you find a pair of jeans which suit your shape and more importantly you feel comfortable in.

Images courtesy of MiH Jeans

This weekend book an appointment with our denim guru, here for Saturday only, who - with the aide of a glass of pimms - will take you through the pre-A/W '12 collection showing you which style of jean is best for your body shape. We'll also show you how to style them with exclusive pieces from the S/S 12 collection which will enhance your new casual wardrobe (which will only be available for one day only - so once it's gone it really is gone! EEK!)

Also, with every purchase of jeans we are offering free alterations (because not everyone is a 5'10 amazonian goddess!) and more importantly we've teamed up with our favourite boutique spa in Edinburgh for a little goodie to reward all your hard work.

With your new pair of jeans we'd like to offer you the chance to win a fabulous prize to try out the brand new Aromatherapy Associates Ultimate Experience worth £85 at Chamomile Sanctuary. This treatment promises to find out what your emotional and physical needs are, working out which oil will suit your requirements and stumulate the senses to rejuvinate you from head to toe.

What more could a girl ask for - looking fabulous in her denims AND a fantastic spa experience?!

To book a denim consultation between 10am-5pm this Saturday please call 0131-225-3280 or email shop@janedavidson.co.uk

In preparation for our denim event this Saturday we have been thinking about all things MiH...
In this month's Drapers MiH founder, Chloe Lonsdale, is discussing the launch of MiH's brother label Jean Machine and the core principles behind her vision of the perfect jean.

It seems that denim has been in Chloe's blood since the day she was born; her father, Tony Lonsdale, launched the now iconic Jean Machine in the 1970s. And it is this laid back glamour of 70s chic which epitomises MiH's current understated sophistication.

We are such massive fans of the label in the store, each of us being able to find a style within the brand to suit all of our differing shapes, sizes and personalities!

Looking forward to SS13 (pre-collection now arriving in store!) Chloe discusses their excitement at being able to work with new finishes and colours: "Spring is always a season where we have so much fun because of the lightness and colours we can play with." Ultimately though, for me, it is as much about the ethos behind the brand as it is about the simply fantastic quality of their garments. As Chloe states in the article: "Great fabric and great fit are the two key ingredients..." to the perfect pair of jean, but for the girls at Jane Davidson it's also got to have just a hint of attitude.

MiH - we salute you, for us you are the perfect mix of attitude and style!

The Stylist and His Muse

It's no secret in Edinburgh that if you want to find real style, then you look to Jane Davidson to lead the way.

We once again had this confirmed, when who should pop into the store to see us?; non other than top Edinburgh stylist, Ian Todd, dressed in his usual wonderfully flamboyant garb, which we all agreed bore an uncanny resemblance to guess who?!!!.....

Take a look and see for yourself!!!!

The End of a Dynasty

I don't mind confessing that I am of an age which means I can quite clearly remember the 80's and all the wonderful crazy, overblown fashions that the decade produced...
Women and men alike were into dressing to the max, and the bolder the colour and crazier the pattern the better.

Even at a young age I was aware that this was a time of high glamour and glitz, and nothing was more of the time than cult American t.v show Dynasty.

Set in Denver Colorado, Dynasty was the tale of two families at war: the Colby's and the Carrington's. The Stars of the show for me and many others were Joan Collins who played super bitch Alexis Colby and Linda Evans who played Crystal Carrington, and boy did these ladies like to have a cat fight! lol

It was shoulder pads at dawn on many an occasion, and the Manolo's were always super high, just to make the point that these women were super rich and super powerful!

The shows chief designer Nolan Miller, has sadly recently passed away, but leaves a legacy that will be never forgotten and which designers will continue to draw inspiration from.

Nolan's weekly budget for the shows wardrobe is said to have been $35,000!!! and it is said that the shows creator Aaron Spelling told Nolan that ‘I never want to see them wear the same thing twice’ and that his brief for the series was to design for ‘a fantasy of a lifestyle – if you were rich, rich, rich this is how you would live’.....

I still aspire to live the 'Dynasty lifestyle' and I'm sure that many other women who can remember, are of the same thinking!!!

CDFA Awards

A couple of weeks ago I posted a picture of what Marc Jacobs wore to the Met ball. It was a very questionable look.
So, you can imagine my horror when I was looking at photos from the CDFA Awards and saw that Seth Meyers, the evening's host was wearing the very same outfit! I am hoping that this was a joke and isn't the start of a new trend amongst men. The Olsen twins won the event's most prestigious award, the Womenswear designer of the year award. Johnny Depp scooped up the prize for Fashion Icon of the year.

Stephanie Laird cashmere knitwear

Yes the first delivery of Stephanie Laird's cashmere knits have arrived in store.

Two beautiful knitted coats, one in pale grey the other deep navy which you would just live in for years and years.

A little navy jumper in a fabulous swing shape, a cream cable knit to die for. We are the only stockists in Scotland of this luxury brand of handknitted cashmere and are very excited about the response. Stephanie has designed for Pringle Stella and Mulberry to name a few and I am sure you will love them as much as I do.

A Rather Royal Affair!

Ok, so I'm not gonna lie but I was getting a little bit bored of the whole Jubilee bombardment.
But, there was something so endearing and patriotic about last night's Jubilee concert that I am a reformed soul and hunting down a pair of those Union Jack sunglasses...Anyone???

There were so many high and surreal moments...shall we discuss Grace Jones and her hula-hoop skills? The woman is amazing! Or perhaps Rolf Harris and his impromptu sing-along session?

However, my favourite was (surprisingly to me?!?) Alfie Boe and Renee Flemming singing on the balcony of Buckingham Palace. It utterly blew me away, and yes I did applaud in my empty sitting room!

Sir Paul McCartney held his own pretty well also, as you would imagine. But I did have to draw the line at Sir Cliff Richards and his hideous grand-dad dancing. My head was screaming turn this over now, yet somehow I ended up watching the whole thing!

It left me with a fuzzy patriotic glow and wondering wether or not we will all be sporting Queenie Chic this time next year...watch this space!

She's A Killer Queen....

I took advantage of my free time at the weekend and went to watch Snow White and the Huntsman...

Overall, I thought it was a good retelling of the fairytale with some amazing special effects, but the star performance was not Kristen Stewart's Snow White, but Charlize Theron as Ravenna, the Wicked Queen.

Not only did she look flawless in every scene (even when she was made up to look older!), she had the most amazing costumes and she carried off the pure evil/amazingly beautiful thing with amazing class.

Go and see it, but be warned, you are sure to fall under her spell!

Following on from yesterdays post, we are full of excitement over the Jubilee in store today.

We have Pimm's and cakes and enough bunting to cover Buckingham Palace!

Although the Great British weather is being unpredictable as usual, we are glad to hear that people all over the city are celebrating in the gardens and on the streets.

If you would like to join our jubilations, we would be happy to see you.... Pimm's all round!

Style Queen

As we charge our glasses to celebrate The Queen's Jubilee, we have decided to decorate the store with some fabulous images of Her Majesty.

It has to be said, over here sixty years as Queen there have been some really wonderful ensembles in every colour imaginable, and always topped off with a fabulous hat.

The most famous designers to be honoured with dressing Her Majesty include: Norman Hartnell and Hardy Aimes in the 50' and 60's, and Edinburgh College of Art trained, Stewart Parvin, who has been designing for her since 2000.

We are looking forward to seeing what The Queen will be wearing during the weekends events, and I am sure she will continue to dress to impress us for many years to come.

Enjoy you weekend however you choose to celebrate.

Love,

Fiona x
