Happy New Year!

Where has 2011 gone?

Although Christmas was very special and busy for me New Year will be a quiet one...what are everyone's plans??

Edinburgh seems to shut down for the Hogmanay Party - well they say the best places to spend NYE are in Edinburgh or Sydney - but still some great party frocks in the shop for tonight's occasion.

Myself, Sarah and the girls at Jane Davidson would like to wish all our customers a Happy New Year.

Love,

Jane

Torchlight Procession

Edinburgh’s official Hogmanay celebrations get under way tonight, with the fabulous annual Torchlight Procession.

It’s a sight to behold, as thousands of torch carriers create a spectacular river of fire, from the historic Royal Mile, along Princes Street, culminating in a fantastic finale of fireworks on Calton Hill.

Wrap yourself up in cosy layers of cashmere, fur and sparkles, and go into Scotland’s capital to help them celebrate the end of another year.

Rock ‘n roll on 2012!

Style Icons Of 2011

Well it’s nearing the end of the year (where has it gone?!) and I love looking back through the year and seeing who I believed to be my style icons of the past 12 months.... and who hasn’t cut the (bang on trend) mustard.

Always a fan – Diane Kruger seems to be constantly chic – whether it’s on the red carpet or on the streets of NY (I actually prefer her dressed down) I just want to be her. Maybe it’s the attendance of Joshua Jackson?!

I <3 Miranda Kerr, she’s my one and only girl crush. Another one who defeats pregnancy with cool style – how do these ladies do it?! Usually dressed in tiny shorts that makes my thunder thighs quiver, a simple tux blazer and basic tee it’s understated at it’s best.

Elle Fanning. She’s only 14. I’m pretty sure when I was 14 I was wearing cycling shorts and oversized t-shirts with sketcher trainers (and not the coolish ones!) or perhaps if I was feeling fancy - denim dungarees! Not Elle – she’s almost unbearably cool, and slightly grungy but in a polished way.

And just like marmite – Rachel Zoe. I know, I know – she’s like a lollipop – but you have to admire her audacity. Dramatic pussy bow blouse and leopard print coat – all when you weigh under 100lbs. That’s putting your neck on the line and I applaud you Ms Zoe!

But – it has to be said – my style Icon of 2011 goes to ..... drumroll please.... OLIVIA WILDE. The TRON star is now firmly on our radar thanks to her consistent ability to master girlie girl and grownup glamour seamlessly. Her look at Paris Haute Couture Fashion Week this January really cinched the deal; a masterclass in how to approach spring’s colour blocking trend if ever we’ve seen one. We can’t wait for more!

Love,

Tom Ford's Modern Gentleman...

Following on from my Everyone thinks Tom Ford is cool (even Jesus) Blog, I thought I’d highlight this fashion powerhouse, film mogul and old romantic’s top 5 tips on how to become a modern gentleman.
Gents, Take heed – Perfect New Year Resolutions follow...

Tip 1.
You should put on the best version of yourself when you go out in the world because that is a show of respect to the other people around you.

Tip 2.

A gentleman today has to work. People who do not work are so boring and are usually bored. You have to be passionate, you have to be engaged and you have to be contributing to the world.

Tip 3.
Manners are very important and actually knowing when things are appropriate. I always open doors for women, I carry their coat, I make sure that they're walking on the inside of the street. Stand up when people arrive at and leave the dinner table.

Tip 4.
Don't be pretentious or racist or sexist or judge people by their background.

And my personal favourite...

Point 5.
A man should never wear shorts in the city. Flip-flops and shorts in the city are never appropriate. Shorts should only be worn on the tennis court or on the beach.

Too true Mr Ford, too true!

And there you have it, the top 5 Gentleman Tips from the suavest gent of them all – Tom Ford, I solute you!

Jeffrey Campbell Xmas Treat

Hope everybody had a fabulous Christmas and got everything they had on their lists! I know I did, indulging perhaps a little too much in festive treats over the last couple of days...

I am particularly happy with one present I recieved this year. These being the Jeffrey Campbell "Lita" shoe boots in black leather. It was merely a few weeks ago that I came across these in almost every other fashion blog I had come read online and felt that they were definitely what was missing from my shoe growing collection. They come in every pattern, colour and material imaginable. It is no suprise they have pretty much sold out globally! Perhaps a little on the high side with an almost 6 inch heel, I will embrace their retro look and be showing these off at every chance possible!

Have an Ab Fab Xmas!

Merry Christmas Ladies!!! As I write this I am growing more and more excited about tomorrow's main event...not the presents, or the dinner or even the Queen's speech! Nope- for me the highlight of this Christmas will be the revisiting of two old friends, Eddy and Patsy, for the Christmas special of Absolutely Fabulous.

All the girls here at Jane Davidson have been reminiscing over their favourite fashion satire of old. Nearly twenty years has passed since it first graced our screens! How could we forget the bee hives, the air kissing and the Lacroix Sweetie Dahling....!

So much has changed in the world of fashion, I can imagine that Jennifer Saunders would have been spoilt for choice in where to begin. Lady Gaga to Lanvin, Victoria Beckham to Versace; fashion has become a melting pot of high street couture and celebrity designers- comedy gold for the taking? However, what we do know now is that it's all about the Stella and Selfridges, the botox and the Brazilians and that Patsy is still as eternally 'glamorous'? as ever.

I don't know about you but I will be tuning in to have a right old giggle at an industry which thankfully never takes itself too seriously.

Merry Christmas. x

Cheryl Cole

I thought that Cheryl Cole was fantastic when she was in x-factor but since the down hill turn in her career I have gone off her.

Her debut shoe collection for StylistPick is the final straw for me, I am sad to say that I am no longer a fan. I think that the shoes look cheap and tacky, it is one ankle strap and buckle after another. I think it would also be nice to see a heel that wasn't a 6 inch stiletto. Newspapers have also reported that there have been complaints of the shoes being really bad quality and falling apart at the heel when people are wearing them - I feel like these shoes are not going to be a success story.

The Great Gatsby

With a year still to go before Baz Luhrmaann's hotly anticipated Great Gatsby hits the big screen, (yes, Christmas 2012, mark it in your new diary now!), The girls here at Jane Davidson are already getting in mood with some new pieces with more than a nod towards the jazz age.

This beautiful drop waited dress by Armani is to die for, and would take you easily to a cocktail party and then on for a spot of Charleston dancing! Add the Chanel inspired jacket to perfect the deco doll look.

Want to take the look to the street?, Try this oh so elegant, cocoon coat, also by Armani. Add a brightly coloured cloche hat and long gloves and you have the trend spot on.

Hannah Martin...

I’ve fallen slightly head-over-heels for jewellery designer, Hannah Martin’s 5th collection, ‘The Man Who knows everything.’

When it comes to jewellery, I’m all about simplistic; monochrome; staple shapes and this collection combines all these qualities resulting in a contemporary collection that will not only last the test time but is also utterly wearable with casual or formal attire.

What’s more, this stunning triangle based collection heralds Hannah as the first Jewellery designer to be stocked by the prestigious Design Museum Shop in London. This is no mean feat – The design Museum is an emporium known for inviting only the most exciting and contemporary of designers.

Take a look at Hannah Martin’s website - It’s a creative feast for those who have an appreciation for fabulous design!

Meryl in Vogue

Meryl Streep has become US Vogue’s oldest cover girl and I love it!
Proclaiming she couldn’t care less about fashion or style, she’s done a pretty good job of becoming a fashion icon.

From Kramer Vs Kramer to the Oscar awarding winning The Devil Wears Prada, this class actress has incorporated her own personal style into every role she’s portrayed on screen.

A great actress with great style!

Gatsby’s Girl...

I’ve never understood Hollywood’s obsession with remaking fabulous movies. Think Lady Killers, The Italian Job and Phycho – these are all classic movies...so why remake bad versions?

Admittedly, there is one remake I will be eager to catch at the pictures – The Great Gatsby. I’d like to make it clear, my interest has nothing to do with Leonardo DiCaprio (let’s face it, he could never compete with 1970’s Robert Redford) nor does it have anything to do with the fabulous Carrie Milligan, who I have a major girl-crush on at the moment. I want to catch this new version purely to see costume designer Catherine Martin’s array of retro fashion.

Seeing as 1920’s Jazz Age style is shaping up to be one of next year’s hot trends, The Great Gatsby is sure to be every Fashionista’s movie of choice!

My big fat gypsy Christmas

Well did you watch it last night???
This morning the girls at Jane Davidson were all talking about My big fat gypsy Christmas....

We're not sure that Nikki, our manageress will be taking any inspiration from last night's show for her wedding in May.

Personal highlights were the toddler's take on Coco Chanel and Dior. One dress even consisted of a mile of fabric.

Teenagers with such moral high ground, yet wardrobes like hookers (can I say that?!)

Today's picture is of our Saturday girl Megan, we love her take on gypsy weddings. She made the dress herself...
with full working fairy lights.

Inspiration from the V&A...

Well Christmas is just around the corner and the the tree is officially decorated!

While flicking through the pages of Grazia I found the one thing missing from my seasonal decoration.

I've been looking for a stag head and this one I've fallen in love with. Its from the Victoria and Albert Museum shop and the patterns are taken from 18th and 19th Century Italian Textiles.

They come in three gorgeous colours and I just can't decide which is my favourite - do you love them too or have I gone a bit Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen?

Love,

Laura

Paul Smith’s Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy...

When Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy came to our cinemas, I was one of the 1st in line to see it.
Visually, it’s impeccable – For those who haven’t seen it, think cigarette smoke filled rooms and tobacco stained mustards complimented by shades of grey in every scene... my idea of perfection.

For the US release of Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, fashion designer Paul Smith has created a quartet of limited edition screen-printed poster, each signed by Mr Smith himself.

The images on the posters include a circus tent, chess piece and my favourite, Morse-Code, all references that will make sense to anyone who has seen the film. The stark black, red and white colour palette perfectly evokes the Cold War backdrop against which the film takes place.

What’s more, all proceeds go to amfAR, the foundation for AIDS research. So if you find yourself in the US of A this week, make sure to pop into a Paul Smith store and snap up one of these posters, you won’t regret it.

Royalty Rocks....

Well. Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge is certainly kicking up a storm in the style stakes.

Not only has industry bible “Drapers” crowned her No1 in their 100 Most Influential People in Fashion, but Madonna (another Her Majesty) has owned up to having a style-crush on our royal Kate. Confessions on the Dance Floor!
Will 2012 see Kate wearing Victoria Beckham – the original Posh Princess - continuing her support for another British fashion label, in the regal footsteps of Jenny Packham and Erdem? We hope so!

Gaultier & Dior Design Christmas Trees for Charity!!!

This has brightened up my wet and windy Wednesday!

JPG and the folks at Christian Dior have given the ol' traditional Christmas tree a make-over!

The trees were auctioned off on Monday night at the Hotel Salomon de Rothschild in Paris with proceeds going to A.V.E.C, the Cancer Charity.

It certainly makes my efforts at getting creative with Tinsel look a little half hearted...

I wonder what the Jane Davidson Christmas Tree would look like - answers on a postcard.

Get Ziggy with it...

Kate Moss has always had a crazy streak but her latest get-up makes her look like Aladdin Sane.

The supermodel sports David Bowie's famous ginger mullet in a cover shot for French Vogue.
The iconic hairstyle was adopted by the rock legend in the early seventies, when he invented his alter ego Ziggy Stardust.

Rock chick Kate has posed as the singer before. In 2003 she appeared on the British Vogue cover with the famous lightning flash across her face.

But who looks better Mossy Ziggy? Or Ziggy, the Real McCoy?

Bowie all the way, for me!
